Obtaining your N.I.E

This is one of the most frequently asked questions we get at Mallorca Expats. It can be intimidating to face a crucial step in the documentation process if you don't know your way around the system.  Whether you are to be a resident in Spain or not, intend to own a property or start a business here, you will require a N.I.E.

We have taken the pain out of registering for your N.I.E with our easy step-by-step guide below.  Just follow the guide and links to register quickly and easily.

What is an N.I.E?

The N.I.E (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is your personal tax identification number and is essential for all financial and many governmental and non-governmental interactions.  It is mandatory for anyone (resident or non-resident) that has a home, financial interests or business affairs in Spain.

For EU residents, you can apply for an N.I.E number at any time, but preferably 3 months prior to residency from their home country.  People from non-EU will generally receive the N.I.E number with their residency application.

Why do I need it ?

You cannot do any of the following without first obtaining an N.I.E.

What an N.I.E isn't

1.  Your N.I.E certificate is not Spanish residency (T.I.E), this has to be applied for separately

2.  You cannot exchange a foreign driving licence in Spain with only an N.I.E

3.  They are no longer valid for only 3 months, they are permanent
